Kodiak Island · Sitka blacktail
Sitka blacktail deer hunting on Kodiak Island.
A DIY yacht-based Sitka blacktail hunt built for hunters who want new country every morning — skiff drops on fresh beaches, mature bucks moving with the weather, and meat back on the yacht by dark.
Kodiak holds the densest Sitka blacktail population in Alaska — and from the yacht, you can hunt the coastline that matters most.
The pattern is simple. Anchor in a protected bay. Skiff to a fresh beach at first light. Climb to a bench or glass a cut, still-hunt through the alders, and let the country dictate the day. When you're done, the skiff comes back — you're not packing a deer four miles to a truck.
Late October through December is prime. Snow at the alpine drives bucks down; the rut brings them into the timber and beach fringe; and the yacht keeps you within striking distance of country other hunters can't reach.

Why yacht-based works for blacktail
- Access. New beach every day means fresh sign and unpressured deer.
- Weather. When wind shuts down one side of the island, we reposition to the lee.
- Meat care. Deer come off the beach and hang in the cool of the yacht within hours.
- Fallback plans. Blown out at the alpine? Seaducks, halibut, and crab pots are already on board.
