Kodiak Island has no road connection to mainland Alaska. The only ways to get there are by commercial flight or by ferry. Once you're on the island, reaching most of it requires a float plane or a boat.
Fly commercial to Kodiak (ADQ)
The fastest and most common route: commercial jet from Anchorage (ANC) to Kodiak Airport (ADQ). Alaska Airlines is the primary carrier with daily jet service; Ravn Alaska runs regional flights on smaller aircraft. Flight time is roughly one hour.
Book early during hunting and fishing seasons. And expect the occasional weather delay — Kodiak fog and wind cancel flights. Give yourself a buffer day on both ends of your trip so a canceled flight doesn't cost you a connection home.
Take the Alaska Marine Highway ferry
The Alaska Marine Highway System runs vehicle-capable ferries between Homer, Whittier, and Kodiak. The Homer route is roughly a 10-hour sailing across the Gulf of Alaska. It's slower than flying but lets you bring a truck, camper, or trailer — and it's the most scenic way to arrive.
Sailings are limited and often booked out months in advance for peak season. Check the current schedule and reserve early.
Getting past the road system
Kodiak has only about 100 miles of road, all around the town of Kodiak on the northeastern corner of the island. The rest — the bays, the wilderness, the country most visitors come to see — is reached only by:
- Float plane charter from Kodiak, landing in a protected bay.
- Boat charter or private vessel from Kodiak or a nearby port.
For our Kodiak Island yacht-based hunts, we include round-trip float plane transport from Kodiak town out to the yacht anchored in a protected bay.
What to pack for float plane flights
Float planes have strict weight limits. Pack in soft-sided duffels and dry bags — not hard cases — and coordinate rifle cases and coolers with your operator in advance so they can plan the load.
