Kodiak Bear vs Grizzly: What's the Difference?

Kodiak brown bears and grizzly bears are the same species but not the same animal. Size, diet, range, and why Kodiak bears grow bigger.

Updated July 2026 · Kodiak Island, Alaska

Short answer: they're the same species. Kodiak bears (Ursus arctos middendorffi) and grizzly bears (Ursus arctos horribilis) are both brown bears — Ursus arctos. But they aren't the same animal, and the differences are real.

Same species, different subspecies

All brown bears in the world are the same species. Taxonomists split them into subspecies based on range and physical differences. Kodiak bears live only on the Kodiak Archipelago — Kodiak, Afognak, Shuyak, and a few smaller islands. They've been isolated there for about 12,000 years, since the end of the last ice age.

Grizzlies are the interior and coastal brown bears of mainland North America — Alaska, western Canada, and the northern Lower 48.

Size: Kodiaks are bigger

Kodiak bears are the largest brown bears in the world, tied with polar bears as the largest terrestrial carnivores.

  • Kodiak male: average 800–1,500 lb, occasionally heavier. Standing, over 10 feet tall.
  • Interior grizzly male: average 400–800 lb.

Females of both are smaller — Kodiak sows average 400–700 lb.

Why Kodiak bears grow so large

  • Unlimited salmon. Five species of Pacific salmon spawn in Kodiak streams from June through September — dense, fat-rich food.
  • Mild coastal winters. Shorter denning periods than interior grizzlies.
  • Isolation. No competition from mainland brown bears; stable, well-managed population.

Population and management

The Kodiak Archipelago holds roughly 3,500 Kodiak bears — one of the densest brown bear populations on Earth. The population is stable and carefully managed by the Alaska Department of Fish & Game with a permit-only hunt.

Bear safety on Kodiak

You will see bear sign — tracks, scat, fresh dig-outs. You may see bears. Carry bear spray or a heavy rifle, make noise in thick brush, never approach a carcass or a sow with cubs, and give bears a wide berth at streams. Attacks are rare, but Kodiak's country is bear country in every direction.

Frequently asked questions

Are Kodiak bears and grizzly bears the same species?+
Yes. Both are Ursus arctos — brown bears. Kodiak bears (U. a. middendorffi) and grizzlies (U. a. horribilis) are two subspecies.
Why are Kodiak bears bigger than grizzlies?+
Diet and isolation. Kodiak bears have unlimited access to salmon, mild coastal winters, and have been isolated from other brown bears on Kodiak Island for around 12,000 years.
How big is a Kodiak bear?+
Adult males average 800–1,500 pounds and can exceed 1,500 pounds. Standing on their hind legs, large males exceed 10 feet.
Are Kodiak bears more dangerous than grizzlies?+
Not really — attacks are rare, and Kodiaks feed heavily on salmon rather than needing to compete for scarce food. Standard bear safety practices apply.
