Float Plane

From Kodiak town to the yacht — by float plane.

Every Kodiak Island hunt starts and ends with a float plane ride from the town of Kodiak to the yacht anchored in a protected bay. It's included with every trip.

You fly commercial into Kodiak. We take it from there.

After landing at the Kodiak airport, hunters meet the float plane on the water and fly out to the yacht — usually a short scenic hop along the Kodiak Island coast. On the last day, the float plane returns to pick you up and lands you back in Kodiak in time for your flight home.

The float plane is the only practical way in and out of most of our anchorages, and it's included in every DIY yacht-based hunt we run.

Weather calls the shots. Kodiak flying weather can push arrivals or pickups by a day. Build a buffer into your travel dates on both ends.

Float plane transport FAQ

Is float plane transport included with the Kodiak hunt?+
Yes. Round-trip float plane from the town of Kodiak out to the yacht and back is included with every DIY yacht-based hunt we run.
How do I get to Kodiak to meet the float plane?+
Fly commercial into Kodiak (ADQ) — typically from Anchorage on Alaska Airlines or Ravn. We'll help you time your arrival around the float plane window; we take it from there on the water. Our travel guide has more on flights and what to pack.
How long is the float plane flight to the yacht?+
Usually a short scenic hop along the Kodiak Island coast to whichever protected bay the yacht is anchored in. Actual flight time depends on the anchorage and the weather.
What happens if the weather delays the flight?+
Kodiak flying weather can push arrivals or pickups by a day. It's normal — build a buffer into your travel dates on both ends of the trip so a weather delay doesn't cost you a commercial flight home. The travel guide covers recommended travel buffers.
Are there weight or luggage limits on the float plane?+
Yes. Float planes have strict weight limits. Pack in soft-sided duffels and dry bags rather than hard cases, and coordinate rifle cases and coolers with us in advance so we can plan the load. See the travel guide for a full packing checklist.
