DIY Sitka Blacktail Gear List: Kodiak Island Hunt

Kodiak eats gear. Wet, windy, salty, and hard on everything. This is the list we tell DIY hunters to work from — buy quality on the top three items and everything else can be reasonable.

Rifle & ammo

• Bolt-action in .270 / 7mm-08 / .308 / .30-06 / 6.5 Creedmoor.
• Quality 130–165 gr bonded or controlled-expansion bullet.
• One box (20) minimum, two if you're checking a bag.
• Sling — bring a real one, not the nylon strip that came with the rifle.

Optics

• 10x binoculars. Non-negotiable — you'll glass more than you walk.
• Rangefinder good to 800 yards.
• Optional: compact spotting scope (12–40x) for alpine glassing.

Rain gear

• Serious waterproof / breathable shell — jacket and bibs.
• Kuiu Yukon, Sitka Stormfront, Helly Hansen Impertech — anything in that tier.

Layers

• Merino base layers (200–260g).
• Fleece or synthetic mid.
• Puffy for glassing. Down is fine on the yacht, synthetic if you sleep on the beach.

Boots

• Late season / beach: knee-high rubber (Xtratuf or Muck).
• Early season / alpine: leather waterproof boot with real support.

Pack

• 2,500–4,000 ci internal frame with a real meat shelf.
• Rain cover.

Small stuff that matters

• Game bags (four per deer, breathable).
• Two knives + small sharpener or replaceable-blade knife.
• Dry bags for everything electronic.
• Headlamp + spare batteries.
• Bear spray — this is Kodiak.
• Alaska hunting license + printed tags in a ziplock.
