Best Time to Visit Kodiak Island: Month-by-Month Guide

The best time to visit Kodiak Island for weather, salmon runs, deer hunting, bear viewing, and quieter shoulder seasons — broken down month by month.

Updated July 2026 · Kodiak Island, Alaska

There is no single best time to visit Kodiak Island — it depends entirely on what you're after. Salmon fishing, bear viewing, and deer hunting all peak at different times of year, and the weather runs on its own schedule.

Summer: June, July, August

The classic Kodiak summer. Longest daylight of the year, warmest temperatures (often 55–65°F highs), and peak activity everywhere:

  • Salmon: sockeye and king in June–July, pinks in July, silvers starting in August.
  • Bear viewing: July and August at salmon streams — the best window.
  • Halibut: reliable all summer.
  • Sea kayaking, hiking, wildlife tours: peak season.

Downside: this is when everyone else comes too. Book early.

Early fall: September, October

Arguably the sweet spot. Silvers still running strong through September, the crowds thin out, and Sitka blacktail deer season is in full swing. Weather turns wetter and windier, but the country opens up.

Late fall / early winter: November, December

Prime late-season deer hunting. Snow pushes bucks down from the alpine to the beach, and yacht-based hunters get first crack at them. Seaduck hunting peaks. Weather is hard — wind, cold rain, occasional snow — but if you're set up right the hunting is the best of the year.

Winter and spring: January through May

Quiet, cold, and windy. Not the tourist window. Some deer hunting continues into January depending on the unit. Spring greens up in May, and salmon are still weeks away — a fine time to visit the town of Kodiak itself without crowds if you're not on a specific activity.

Weather always wins

Whatever month you pick, plan around Kodiak weather. Wind and fog cancel flights, and float planes wait for the sky to open. Build in a buffer day on both ends of your trip. Full detail in our Kodiak Island weather guide.
